Sometimes eating at a fast food restaurant can’t be avoided. You’re running late to work in the morning, don’t have much time for lunch, or you’re just too tired after a day at work to prepare a meal. But there are some steps you can take to make that fast food meal a little healthier.
Many restaurants now allow you to choose a healthy substitute instead of fries. If you have a choice a bowl of fruit or a side salad are good options. Other good choices include a baked potato, apple slices, corn on the cob, or baked potato chips.
Choose grilled items instead of fried foods. For example, choose the grilled chicken sandwich instead of the crispy chicken sandwich or breaded fish fillet. Some fast food restaurants now offer lean meats like turkey or lean roast beef.
Opt for a diet soda, water, or unsweetened tea for your drink. A 32-ounce soda contains approximately 400 calories and a shake can contain more than 1,000.
Portion size is always a problem when eating out. Skip the double or triple meat burger. Order the smallest size or even the children’s meal. Choosing the children’s burger could save you about 600 calories. If you’re going to order fries pass on the super-size option - this will save you about 250 calories. (Though the better choice is to select a healthier option than fries.)
