Daily activity needs to be combined with a healthy weight management program. To some people exercise means pushing your body to its limits and experiencing aching muscles and joints. After all, no pain - no gain. Isn’t that what you’ve heard? But with the sedentary lifestyle followed by most Americans incorporating some “activity” in their daily routine would produce big health benefits. So replace the word “exercise” with “activity” and try to do some of the suggested activities below daily. As a general guideline adults should try for 30 minutes a day of moderate activity and children should strive for 60 minutes.
Your individual activity goal depends on your current health and weight issues. So begin by seeing your medical doctor or health care adviser to determine your target weight and what activity level is suitable for you.
For those who haven’t been active at all, it’s advisable to begin slow. For example, by walking 10 minutes each day and gradually building up time and distance. Continue until you increase to a “brisk” walking pace. Consistent daily progress should be your goal.
During activity calories are burned and in the long run pounds are shed. The duration and intensity of the the activity determines the number of calories burned. Besides walking you can try biking or swimming.
Other daily activities:
- Cleaning house
- Washing your car
- Working in the garden
- Washing the windows
- Washing your dog
- Rent exercise videos (and follow along not just watch)
- Partner up with a neighbor to walk
- Go dancing
There are unlimited ways to be active and enjoy life at the same time.
